Montana Gov. Steve Bullock on Presidential Bid, First Debate Appearance in Detroit
Bullock explains why he missed the first debate and talks about why he should be the next Democratic presidential candidate.
Before the next round of Democratic candidate debates kick off tonight in Detroit at the Fox Theatre, Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson catches up with a contender who was absent from the first debate in June. His name is Steve Bullock and he’s the Governor of Montana. Now in his second term, Bullock joins Henderson to talk about the big issues he stands for and what it’s like navigating the complex realities of our current political landscape.
Bullock says that his role in Montana has situated him well to take on President Donald Trump in 2020. Bullock was reelected in the gubernatorial race the same year when Trump carried the state in the presidential election, and notes that there was a significant overlap in voters that elected them both. However, he is still very critical of Trump’s presidency. “If a preschool teacher said the things this president does, that teacher would be fired,” says Bullock.
One issue central to Bullock’s campaign is the elimination of dark money from elections, which he says he has been able to do in his own state. Bullock says that wasn’t able to attend the last debate because Montana’s legislature was meeting and he “had a job to do.”
Bullock will face nine other candidates at the first night of Democratic debates tonight.
