New Book Explores the History of Jazz in Detroit

A new book from former Detroit Free Press Arts reporter and critic Mark Stryker looks into the history of jazz in Detroit.
While cities like New York and New Orleans have a well-known history, Detroit’s contribution to Jazz is deep. “Jazz from Detroit,” focuses on the city’s influential role providing some of the most innovative jazz musicians. The book explores Detroit’s role in shaping the course of modern and contemporary jazz from the 1940s until the present day, and chronicles the indispensable contributions of dozens of musicians nurtured by Detroit.
“The history of jazz and the history of jazz from Detroit are indivisible,” Stryker writes in the preface of the book. “You can’t tell one story without the other.”
