TokiMonsta, Shigeto Perform at MOCAD and Other Can’t Miss Shows This Weekend
A Soular Vortex is coming to Ant Hall and Electric Blanket and Deadbeat Beats have album release parties the weekend of July 26, 2019.
Longtime Detroit music journalist Jeff Milo’s byline appears in publications locally and globally. He’s been plugging ears into the Detroit scene for years with his prolific Deep Cutz blog and his new YouTube series, The Milo Show. Each week, Milo gives us a rundown of can’t-miss shows in and around the Detroit area.
July 26
Soular Vortex at Ant Hall
This is spearheaded by what I consider to be a life-changing band, The Imaginatron. The band treats each performance like a ceremony where they preach the life-changing power of forging community. Onyx Ashanti, a mad wizard and instrument inventor, will be there, along with Ypsilanti indie-rockers Zzvava, Golab from Toledo, Sextez, Vybe with Martez Claybren and Richard Album and the Singles.
This song, by the Imaginatron, is called “Better Living Through Oblivion.“
TokiMonsta and Shigeto at MOCAD
The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit has a summer music series called Hot Logic that encompasses outdoor performances featuring a diverse and eclectic array of stellar artists.
Detroit’s own Shigeto will be performing along with headliner TOKiMONSTA, a Grammy-nominated California producer of electronic music. Shigeto is a percussionist who blends organic and synthetic with his mesmerizing arrangements of electronic music. Doors open at 6:00 pm, and this is an all ages event.
Here’s Shigeto’s “Detroit Part 2.”

Electric Blanket’s Album Release Party at the Dreamland Theater
Ypsilanti band Electric Blanket, a post-punk quartet that their interests as mayhem, occultism, romance, and cured meats, will be performing at the Dreamland Theatre on North Washington alongside another area artist, Dani Darling, as well as & B, Girl Fight and Red Electric Shark.
Electric Blanket have a new album out this week called “Terminal Leisure.” Here is their track “Road Weary Warrior.”
Deadbeat Beat’s Album Release Party at UFO Factory
Deadbeat Beat have a new album called “How Far,” coming out Crystal Palace and Arrowhawk Records, and they’re partying at UFO Factory in Corktown with Shells, a solo guitarist of dreamy distortion, Career Club, a duo creating surreal indie-pop, and Soviet Girls, blending surf-pop and post-punk. This is a duo that’s known each other their whole lives, adding on their bassist about a decade ago, and now make super catchy but substantive pop-rock.
