Remembering the Moon Landing: Apollo 11 Mission Hits 50th Anniversary

This week 50 years ago marked the first time an American astronaut stepped onto the moon.

Were you alive when this happened? If so, you probably remember exactly where you were and exactly how you felt witnessing this miraculous moment in American history.

Detroit Public Television and the Cranbrook Institute of Science are hosting a celebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of this scientific feat. Headlining the event is award-winning author Charles Fishman whose latest book, One Giant Leap: The Impossible Mission That Flew Us to the Moon, looks at the history of the lunar landing.

Fishman speaks with Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson about NASA’s Apollo 11 mission that brought American astronauts to the moon.

Michigan Senator Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Twp) also joins the program. Last week, Senator Peters and Texas Senator Ted Cruz introduced bi-partisan legislation intended to preserve the landing sights on the moon. It passed out of the committee and goes for a full vote in the Senate this afternoon.
