Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed historic changes to Michigan’s auto insurance system into law last week.

It’s an accomplishment for Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike. No-fault auto insurance has been an issue for years, and these new leaders struck a deal just a few months into their tenures.

But it’s not without controversy. The law has been criticized for ignoring traffic accident victims in need of longterm care. And some complain the process behind the law’s passage was rushed and hidden from public view.

Crain’s Detroit Business reporter Chad Livengood has been covering the issue closely for years. He joins Detroit Today to talk about the new law, what it means for drivers, and answer questions about its likely impact.
