It’s Election Day here in Michigan. Yes, you read that right.

We don’t talk very often about May elections, especially in off-years. But they’re important. Several communities in Metro Detroit have millages and other proposals up for a vote.

Arguably, these are the kinds of decisions that affect you most.

But Tuesday’s elections are even more significant because they’re the first time people will be able to exercise new voting rights under last year’s Proposal 3 initiative. That means no-reason absentee voting and same-day registration are now part of the landscape.

It’s also the first election overseen by new Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.
