Buy Me Some Peanuts and…Salad Jars? Here’s What’s New at Tigers Games [PHOTOS]

Comerica Park expands its concession choices in 2019.

Baseball is back. You’ve got your tickets, you found your seat, now you want something to eat. Sure, you can always get a hot dog or peanuts. But what if it’s a hot day and you want something a bit lighter, like a salad?

Salad? At a baseball stadium?

Yes.

Behold, the salad in a jar, complete with dressing:

Comerica Park has expanded its concession menu for 2019 Detroit Tigers games, and depending on your tastes/dietary desires, you can probably find something to suit you.

“We listened to the fans,” says the stadium’s executive chef, Mark Szubeczak. He and his staff come up with new items every season. So who dreamed up the salad in a jar?

“One of our managers always brings her salad in a jar, so we said, ‘hey, let’s try that,'” Szubeczak says. This year’s menu also offers a plant-based burger, hummus, and a variety of fruit, including watermelon when it’s in season.

The lighter items are meant to appeal to vegetarians and vegans. Other choices — not so much. For example, there’s the new Coney dog egg roll, a follow-up to the Coney dog pizza that’s already available at Tigers games. Got a sweet tooth? There are zeppole, which are basically fried dough served with dipping sauce. And Guernsey Farms Dairy in Northville has created an ice cream especially for baseball fans: Detroit Grand Slam, which mixes coffee and salted caramel flavors with chunks of chocolate (blue moon is also available).

Szubeczak says some items are instantly popular, such as the Coney dog pizza and deep-fried Oreos, which were introduced in 2016. Others turn out to be, well, flops, such as the “brat pop,” basically a deep-fried bratwurst patty on a stick, which came out that same year.

“It was fun, and it looked cool, but it didn’t go as well as we thought it would,” the chef admits.

WDET’s Meta Stange and Pat Batcheller tasted some of the items on this year’s menu, and took pictures of some their favorites. Enjoy!
