Just a year into his interim presidency at Michigan State University, former governor John Engler is out.

Engler offered his resignation Wednesday night, saying he would quit next week, staving off a likely firing by the MSU Board of Trustees.

The board accepted his resignation but told him he’s done today, not a week from now.

Engler’s tenure was marked by brusque and controversial commentary about the victims of the Larry Nassar sexual abuse scandal, and the apparent last straw came this week when he said the survivors were enjoying the spotlight.

You can read Engler’s 11-page resignation letter here.
