Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel says the area’s population is changing.  He delivered his annual State of the County address Wednesday evening.  Hackel says many of Macomb’s newest residents are immigrants.

“Seventy-two percent of all new Macomb County residents in were foreign-born,” says Hackel.

“Think about that.  The majority of our new neighbors no longer come from another county, but rather, they come from another country.”

Hackel also touted the county’s low unemployment rate and AA bond rating during the address at the Macomb Center for the Performing Arts.

In a speech running roughly 50 minutes, Hackel pointed out key accomplishments in 2018.  He also discussed the county’s six criteria for success.

They include a growing population, rising educational attainment, increased family income, a falling jobless rate, a stable housing market, and financial stability for the county.

This is Hackel’s eighth State of the County address.  He was first elected as county executive in 2010 after a change in the county charter created the new position – on par with officials in Wayne and Oakland Counties.

Democrat Mark Hackel was elected to a third term in November, defeating Republican challenger Joseph Hunt by a margin of more than two to one.
