Detroit artist Jason Phillips will bring his latest body of work “Majesty” to the Norwest Gallery on Grand River Avenue starting tonight at 7 p.m. with an opening reception that’s free and open to the public.

Phillips recently stopped by the WDET studios to speak with CultureShift’s Ryan Patrick Hooper about the message behind his new exhibition.

“It’s not often that people of color can go into galleries and museums and actually see a representation of them that’s empowering,” says Phillips. “I want that to be significant about my work. As long as I’m creating, I want to be able to reflect my culture and my people in a way that needs to be documented. That’s part of our job as artists.”
