Michigan citizens will soon have the option to be automatically registered to vote when visiting the offices of the Secretary of State.

Proposal 3 passed, giving residents the ability to register to vote on Election Day. The measure also re-instates straight party voting and allows no reason absentee voting.

Kary Moss with ACLU Michigan says the win is a victory for democracy.

“We’re so excited that so many people understood how important it was that voting be accessible for every single person in the state,” Moss says. “And that Michigan be leading the pack in voting rights in the country and not be at the bottom of the pack.”

Moss says the new measure could increase voter turnout in Michigan for the 2020 presidential election by 400 thousand votes.
