Interfaith Gathering to Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ahead of MLK Day
“Where do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?” will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Greater New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit.
Monday is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. On Sunday, members of three congregations here in Detroit will gather for an interfaith celebration of Dr. King.
The program, “Where do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?,” is the latest event put on each year by the Greater New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, Russell Street Missionary Baptist Church, and Adat Shalom Synagogue. WDET’s Jake Neher recently spoke with Rev. Kenneth Flowers and Rabbi Aaron Bergman about the event.
“Dr. King had been a hero of mine since I was a little boy,” says Rabbi Bergman. “I thought an opportunity to celebrate his life and legacy would be a great thing to do.”
“We’re going to announce the kick-off of a new organization called the Coalition for Black and Jewish Unity,” says Rev. Flowers. “That coalition will be geared toward African Americans and the Jewish community coming together to speak out against racism, against antisemitism, and to do what we can in a positive way to keep our communities together.”
The event is at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 14 at Greater New Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit
