Holiday Scents and Flavors from Detroit’s Scent Docent
“It’s a way that you’re going to be bringing a different scent to someone’s home.” -Terees Western, Founder of Fragranted
With the holidays upon us, adding a little creative flare can make gift giving and party hosting ever more festive. Terees Western is a Scent Docent and founder of Fragranted, a fragrance and flavor education apothecary. She speaks to WDET’s Erin Allen about why appealing to our sense of smell can be just as important as that holiday meal or festive decor.
“Taste and smell are very important because, number one, they go together,” says Western. “One of the reasons they’re so powerful is that they relate to memory.”
So what are some scents and smells we can use to create those lasting holiday memories? Terees suggests keeping it natural and simple.
“Most People when they’re going to someone’s home always bring the kind of obligatory bottle of wine,” she says. “But I say step out and do something different now… things like a spice pack…cinnamon, clove, nutmeg. I personally like a lot of the different flavored vinegars. So it’s a way that you’re going to be bringing a different scent to someone’s home.”
