Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson Recaps Mayoral Debate
“(The debate) was tense before it even got started,” says reporter Chastity Pratt Dawsey.
Last night, incumbent Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and state Sen. Coleman Young II (D-Detroit) faced off in their only debate before the mayoral election on November 7th.
Both candidates came out swinging, accusing each other of incompetence and questioning each other’s character and integrity.

Bridge Magazine reporter Chastity Pratt Dawsey, who was one of three journalists asking the candidates questions, joins Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson to recap the debate.
“(The debate) was tense before it even got started,” says Pratt Dawsey. “There was friction and irritation on the mayor’s face from the beginning.”
Eric Lupher of the Citizens Research Council of Michigan also joins the show to share his thoughts about the debate.
According to Lupher, a challenger has certain advantages when debating an incumbent politician.
“This is an opportunity for a challenger to get out and be seen as a legitimate candidate,” he says.
