Michigan GOP Congressman Weighs Call for Independent Russia Investigation
Michigan GOP U.S. Rep. Amash, frequent Trump critic, considering legislation to create independent Russia investigation.
A member of Congress from Michigan is considering introducing legislation to establish an independent commission to investigate possible links between Russia and Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.
The move comes after the President abruptly fired the head of the FBI.
James Comey was conducting an investigation into potential Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Numerous Democratic members of Congress are now calling for an independent investigation into the situation.
And that list of critics could soon include U.S. Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI).
Amash said on Twitter that he finds the President’s letter notifying Comey he was terminated “bizarre.”
Staff for Amash say he is considering sponsoring a plan to create an independent panel to examine whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia.
Sources say that Comey was removed from his post only days after requesting more resources to pursue the investigation.
White House spokespeople say any FBI investigation into Russian activities during the 2016 presidential election that was underway before Comey was fired is still continuing.
Amash and Trump have been at odds over a number of issues.
Last month a senior adviser to the president called for the Michigan GOP to mount a primary challenge to Amash in his next bid for office.
