Conservative Columnist Bill Kristol Weighs In on Trump’s First 100 Days
Kristol says Trump hasn’t spelled doom for the GOP yet, but he’s not backing down from his anti-Trump stance.
Donald Trump’s first 100 days as president are over.
Although it’s an arbitrary measure of time to judge a president and the job he’s doing, it’s also one that Trump himself made a big deal about during his campaign.
How has he measured up to his own promises and goals?
Political analyst and commentator Bill Kristol, who is founder and editor-at-large of The Weekly Standard, is in town for the Michigan State University Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR) program, “The First 100 Days of the Trump Administration.” That program takes place at 5:30 Monday evening at the Kellogg Center Auditorium in East Lansing. The event is free and open to the public.
Kristol joins Stephen Henderson on Detroit Today to talk about his impression of Trump’s early days in office.
He says he has not seen anything that has changed his initial anti-Trump stance. However, he says that getting Neil Gorsuch approved as a Supreme Court Justice was important for Republicans.
“I do think Trump is a regression,” Kristol says, “to various forms of populism, and pseudo-conservatism, and even authoritarianism in many of those respects.”
According to Kristol, the replacement of former national security advisor Michael Flynn with H.R. McMaster could be remembered as a key moment, if Trumps presidency does not go horribly. Kristol says he has high regard for McMaster.
