University of Michigan Implements Gender Pronoun Preference System-Wide

Dearborn and Flint faculty can see students’ designated pronouns.

The University of Michigan’s Dearborn and Flint campuses are making it easier for students to tell faculty and staff what pronoun to use when referring to them.

The university announced this week that students can now designate their pronoun preference and have that information listed on class rosters. It said the move is a part of ensuring that all students feel “valued, respected and included.”

U of M – Dearborn Student Government President Fiana Arbab said many students may not have thought about needing to designate a pronoun preference, but that it’s very important for some students. Shes said providing faculty with the information helps them make those students feel more welcome.

Students can choose “he,””she,””they,””no pronoun” or type a designated pronoun that’s not listed. The option was rolled out on the Ann Arbor campus in September.
