Colon Cancer Increasing in Young Adults

New study shows 4X greater risk than previously believed

A new study from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute finds that colon cancer cases are on the rise in younger people.

It’s anticipated that this year 15-percent of all colon cancer cases will be diagnosed in people under the age of 50.

Spokesman for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Bob Wheaton, says until now colon cancer screening had been recommended mainly for people over the age of 50.

“Now we’re telling people that they may want to talk to their doctors about a possible screening before their age 50. In Particular if they have a family history of colorectal cancer”

Wheaton says the key to successfully treating colon cancer is early detection.

Colorectal cancer is third most common kind of cancer diagnosed in the U-S.
