President Trump told a crowd of autoworkers at Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti that the Trump Administration will protect their jobs and U.S. manufacturing.

The President also announced that the Environmental Protection Agency will resume a review of fuel emissions standards, a review that had been stopped by the Obama Administration just prior to Mr. Trump taking office.

“America cannot be a wealthy country if special interests game the system to profit from the exodus of our companies and from the exodus of our jobs.” — President Trump to autoworkers in Ypsilanti

President Trump told the crowd that the regulations amount to an assault on the U.S. auto industry.

He says that has allowed other nations to usurp jobs and, in the process, deepen the national debt.

“We owe $20 trillion with our policies,” the President said. “America cannot be a wealthy country if special interests game the system to profit from the exodus of our companies and from the exodus of our jobs. We must embrace a new model. Let’s call it the American model.”

He also noted that the Willow Run facility will be a test center for autonomous vehicles that he said will help restore the “manufacturing might” of both Michigan and the U.S.

Mr. Trump also promised there will be a “big announcement” about auto-related jobs coming next week.

WDET’s Quinn Klinefelter was monitoring the President’s visit.

He told WDET’s Amy Miller that the President argues the government must take a second look at fuel emissions requirements.
