Switch Your Ride to Work Instead of Driving Solo

SEMCOG encourages commuters to try alternative transportation.

The Southeast Michigan Council of Governments is rewarding solo drivers who try other ways to get to work. The agency, which represents seven counties, encourages commuters who usually drive alone to carpool, take a bus, ride a bike, walk to work, or work from home at least once through Feb. 24. SEMCOG Alternative Commute Specialist Iris Steinberg tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller leaving the car home helps the region in several ways.

“Taking a commute mode other than driving alone reduces congestion on our roadways,” Steinberg says, adding that it also reduces pollution and driving costs.

Steinberg says SEMCOG offers prizes to those who register their commute at its Switch My Trip web site. Click on the audio player to hear the conversation.
