Evans: Rock Venture Proposal Needs Vetting

In the meantime…Evans says the county will draft a proposal for finishing the jail with Walsh Construction.

Warren Evans, Wayne County Executive

Wayne County Executive Warren Evans says there needs to be a thorough vetting of the Rock Ventures’ proposals to build a new criminal justice complex.

Dan Gilbert offered to build three new public safety buildings in exchange for the unfinished jail property on Gratiot. He wants to build a new soccer stadium there.

Wayne County Executive Warren Evans says the County Board of Commissioners should look into whether the Gilbert proposal meets all of the county’s criminal justice needs.

“I personally have doubts that 420 million will be enough to build what we need. And I’m not talking about cost overrun, I’m talking about the amount of money needed to build the facilities that truly meet our needs,”  Evans says.

Evans says there are other issues with the proposal that need to be vetted before a decision can be made.

He says any action taken needs to be in the best financial interest of the county and its residents.
