Mayor Urges Detroit Residents to Seek Tax Refunds
City officials say last year, 26,000 Detroiters left $80 million on the table in unclaimed Earned Income Tax Credits.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is urging residents to file their tax returns. City officials say last year, 26,000 Detroiters left $80 million on the table in unclaimed Earned Income Tax Credits. Now, the city is partnering with the Accounting Aid Society to open 30 facilities that offer tax assistance for free. Duggan says more than 500 city residents are volunteering in the effort.
“These folks will help fill out your tax returns at no charge. Your neighbors have signed up to be qualified to do these returns to put $1,000 or $2,000 back in your pocket.”

Jim Fish, area director for the IRS, says the average Earned Income Tax Credit is $2,400. He says the tax credit lifts nine million families out of poverty every year with 94,000 families in Detroit receiving more than $305 million in tax credits last year.
