Does Betsy DeVos Confimation Delay Spell Trouble For Her Nomination?
Michigan Public Radio Network’s Rick Pluta says Democrats and Republicans have “equal and opposite goals” for hearings.
The confirmation hearings for president-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet picks are in full swing. But the process to confirm Michigan billionaire and philanthropist Betsy DeVos — Trump’s choice for education secretary — has stalled, as have hearings for three other nominees.
The hearings for DeVos were supposed to begin on Wednesday, but have been delayed a week. That’s after Democrats raised concerns about DeVos’ financial disclosures, incomplete ethics review, and possible conflicts of interest.
Rick Pluta, the state Capitol bureau chief for Michigan Public Radio Network, joins Detroit Today with Stephen Henderson from Washington D.C.
“None of the Democrats that I have talked to are operating under the illusion that they can stop the DeVos nomination,” says Pluta. “The opponents of the DeVos nomination, if they can’t stop it, are hoping that the hearings will at least serve as a forum to raise questions about the DeVos agenda and the DeVos goals for education and inducting more school choice, less federal oversight.”
