Fatalities Rise As More People Walk, Ride [Data+Links]

SEMCOG data show increases in pedestrian and bicyclist deaths.

The number of people killed while walking or riding a bicycle in Southeast Michigan rose 10 percent in 2015. Data collected by the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments show 102 pedestrians and 15 bicyclists died in traffic crashes last year. The number of pedestrian fatalities has risen every year since 2007, while bicyclist deaths have risen three years in a row. SEMCOG Deputy Executive Director Carmine Palombo tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller there’s no single reason for the increases, but one factor is that more people are walking or riding bikes.
