Ayers Earns Top Spot in Detroit City Council Race
The Reverend David Bullock came up second.
Janeé Ayers came out ahead in yesterday’s Detroit City Council primary race. The councilmember-at-large, who was appointed to th position last year, earned nearly 50 percent of the vote. She’ll square off against the Reverend David Bullock, a pastor who led a campaign to recall Michigan Governor Rick Snyder in the wake of the Flint water crisis. He earned nearly a quarter of the vote. Ayers says she’s confident that she’ll win the election come November.
“I’m not a career politician. I don’t come to this table with a name because I am not that person. I am what real Detroit looks like. I struggle, I know what debt has looked like, I know what it means to come out of it, I know what that is. I am Detroit when I sit in that chair everyday.”

Ayers was appointed to fill a vacant seat when Councilwoman Saunteel Jenkins left City Council in 2014. She has the endorsements of Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, City Council President Brenda Jones, and Wayne County Executive Warren Evans. All nine of Detroit’s City Council seats come up for election in 2017.
