Despite the recent email leak suggesting that Democratic Party officials had a clear preference for Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders, this week’s convention will be about coming together, says Congresswoman Debbie Dingell.

Dingell joins Detroit Today host Stephen Henderson to preview the convention and discuss what the party needs to do to build strength heading into November.

Both candidates were criticized in the emails, says Dingell, and, due to the amount of work the two campaigns did in each state, it doesn’t seem likely that they had an effect on the final result.

What bothered her the most about the emails were the comments on religious beliefs, she says.

“I think that should always be out of the bounds of political discourse,” says Dingell. “Nobody should ever use religion as a political weapon.”

Michigan will have a strong presence at the Democratic National Convention, she says. Scheduled to speak are Detroit mayor Mike Duggan, former governor Jennifer Granholm, and Henrietta Ivey, a home care worker, and supporter of the Fight for $15 campaign to raise the minimum wage. Ivey met with Clinton as the candidate campaigned in Michigan during the primary process.

“What I’m excited about,” says Dingell, “is that Michigan is represented in many different ways.”
