Detroit Launches Program to Track Demolitions Online
Detroit offers online map to track buildings set to be torn down. City being investigated for rise in demolition costs.
Officials in Detroit are launching a new online program that tracks where and when homes will be demolished in the city.
The tracking program uses an online color-coded map to show both the roughly 9,500 blighted buildings that have been taken down since 2014 and about 700 others targeted for demolition.
The program includes addresses, dates and how much it cost to take down each building.
City officials say the map will be updated daily in an attempt to be more transparent about the overall demolition process.
The move comes amid concerns about a sharp increase in the cost of demolishing homes in Detroit.
Mayor Mike Duggan’s administration says for several years demolition contracts worth more than $25,000 have not received the required approval from the Detroit City Council.
The federal government and the FBI are also investigating Detroit’s demolition program.
