Michigan May Be Best Craft Beer State In the Country, Says “Beer Geek” Author
Patrick Dawson’s new book “The Beer Geek Handbook,” explores burgeoning beer culture in U.S.
It’s a big week for small breweries across the country. Hundreds of tap rooms, restaurants, and stores are participating in American Craft Beer Week with tap takeovers, limited releases, and beer specials. More than 42,000 breweries are now operating in the United States. That’s the highest number of active breweries since 1873.
Author and self-proclaimed “beer geek” Patrick Dawson set out to get a handle on America’s burgeoning beer culture. He spoke with Detroit Today Producer Jake Neher about his new book “The Beer Geek’s Handbook,” and where he ranks Michigan among notable craft beer states.
When asked — er, challenged — about why he left Michigan and the rest of the Midwest out of a section exploring some of the notable craft beer regions in the country and world, Dawson says it’s a fair criticism.
“Michigan is maybe the best beer state in the country,” says Dawson, who says he would consider adding a chapter to reflect that in future editions of the book.
Dawson says craft brewers have not run out of ideas and continue to innovate. He says that’s keeping the culture of craft beer alive and well.
“The beers that are being created, and the people and the scene of people who are enjoying it is just so much fun to be a part of,” he says.
