Oil Public Meeting Southfield

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is giving the green light to Jordan Development to drill for oil at a church in Southfield.  Nearby residents opposed the permit at a public meeting in February. The DEQ says it has imposed some restrictions to address concerns.

Mayor Ken Siver says he does not believe the states provisions are enough.

“Although the DEQ says they follow their guidelines, we do not feel that their guidelines are stringent enough when it comes to a developed area<” Siver says.

Siver says the city has a moratorium on oil drilling in Southfield until April 28th. He says he’s working on an ordinance to prevent oil drilling in the city’s residential areas.
