Senate Bill Aims to Prevent Great Lakes Oil Spills

Commerce Committee approves legislation unanimously.

A U.S. Senate committee has unanimously approved legislation to protect the Great Lakes from oil spills. Michigan Democrat Gary Peters co-sponsored the bill (S. 2276), which designates the lakes as an “unusually sensitive area”. Peters tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller the measure will subject all pipelines in the region to the strictest federal oversight and the most rigorous inspections.
