Diversity in Comics – Minority Superheroes On the Rise?

What Is Diversity Bringing to Comic Books?

Dan Merritt

The comic book world is becoming more diverse with both talent and characters, but what does it mean? Host Stephen Henderson talks with Dan Merritt, owner of Green Brain Comics in Dearborn about the rise of diverse superheroes.

Diversity: Comic books have started to welcome more and more minority superheroes and creative talent, from the Pakistani Ms. Marvel to Ta-Nehisi Coates writing Black Panther. “There has been a great move towards diversification of the entire business,” Merritt says.

Appeal: Bringing in more interesting and diverse talent is key to Marvel’s business strategy. “I think that bringing in someone like Ta-Nehisi Coates, who has this wide appeal…this is a master move,” Merritt tells Stephen.
