Town Hall Meeting Addresses: Should Politicians Draw District Lines?

The League of Women Voters in Michigan will host a town hall meeting addressing how district lines are drawn.

2011 Senate District Statewide Map

The League of Women Voters in Michigan is hosting 30 town hall meetings around the state to address redistricting. The league is advocating for an independent commission to draw the lines for Congressional, State House, and Senate districts instead of letting politicians draw them.

President Judy Karandjeff says the league was involved in the redistricting process in 2011 and didn’t see much inclusion of the public in the decisions.

There were no public hearings held around the state for example to look at the maps before they were adopted by the legislature and governor. So I think we’re looking at alternatives that would allow more transparency, fairness, and opportunity for public input whatever the process is.

Karanjeff says the meetings began in light of the U-S Supreme Court’s decision to let an independent commission draw Congressional district lines in Arizona.

The next town hall meeting will be held Tuesday night at Western International High School in Detroit.
