Justice Department Grants Detroit Funding for More Cops, Body Cams
Justice officials say federal grant will help Detroit hire more police and make their actions more transparent.
The U.S. Justice Department is granting nearly $3 million to the Detroit Police Department to pay for new personnel and equipment.
The federal grant money is designed to help Detroit hire 15 new police officers and buy body cameras.
City officials want all Detroit police officers equipped with body cameras as it will help create greater transparency about police interactions with the public.
Officials are also announcing a new education program in which police will join with the Detroit Public Schools to offer courses in law enforcement.
It will be similar to a new two-year education and training program at Detroit’s Cody High School, which allows students to be certified as firefighters or paramedics by the time they are ready to graduate.
