Study: Green Building Construction Jobs Expected to Double

Officials with the U.S. Green Building Council project jobs to rise to 242,000 in Michigan.

A new study commissioned by the U.S. Green Building Council finds sustainable building projects are on the rise in Michigan. About 132,000 green construction jobs were reported between 2011 and 2014. That number is expected to nearly double in the next three years. Kevin McNeely is the Chair of the U.S Green Building Council’s Detroit Regional Chapter. He says sustainable practices are both ecological and economical.

“We’re going to lower the operational costs of the buildings that people live in, work in, learn in and we’re going to improve the indoor air quality and just the general feel, the comfort level, the general feel of the building that they’re in.”
Kevin McNeely, Chair of the U.S Green Building Council’s Detroit Regional Chapter

Neely says Michigan’s green construction will contribute more than $20 billion to U.S. Gross Domestic Product in the next three years, but falls short of the impact of other Midwest states like Ohio and Illinois.
