High School Student Work in Healthcare Field through DMC Program
Detroit high school students are learning first-hand what it is like to work in a hospital.
Detroit high school students are receiving experience in the healthcare field through a summer program called Project Genesis. The program was created by the Detroit Medical Center in 2006 and draws in 100 students each summer.
Program manager Betty Jean Chapel says students get to work in the different hospitals of the DMC.
“They have an opportunity to shadow, they shadow the PCA and nursing staff so they get a sense of what’s it’s like to be on an actual patient floor,” Chapel says.
Chapel says students also learn how business and administration runs in a hospital. She says the program helps students get a head start in health care careers.
