The head of the Michigan Democratic Party says Republican officials should rescind an invitation to presidential candidate Donald Trump to speak at a political event in the state next month.

The controversial Trump is scheduled to be the featured speaker at the Lincoln Day fundraising dinner held by the Genesee and Saginaw County Republicans.

But MDP chair Brandon Dillon says Republicans in Michigan should un-invite Trump and instead denounce what Dillon calls Trump’s “anti-immigrant, anti-veteran policies.”

Dillon says the GOP should not use Trump’s “xenophobia and exclusion” to raise money.

Trump recently criticized U.S. Senator John McCain, who spent five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam, for being hailed as a hero simply because he was captured.

The head of the Genesee County Republican party has countered that Trump has the right to free speech and that the role of the dinner is to raise money.

The Genesee County GOP chair says with all the controversy surrounding Trump, the event will likely be sold out.
