MDOT says I-94 Must Be Modernized [Document]
State to release new I-94 traffic data at public meetings in Detroit.
Environmental groups question the need to expand a seven-mile stretch of I-94 in Detroit. The Michigan Department of Transportation plans to add a new traffic lane between I-96 and Conner starting in 2019. Nick Schroeck of the Great Lakes Environmental Law Center says he agrees that the freeway needs to be modernized. But he says the justification for the extra lane is based on environmental and traffic data that are more than 10 years old. WDET’s Pat Batcheller spoke with MDOT spokesman Rob Morosi. He says new traffic data will be presented at four public meetings on the project next week. But Morosi adds he doesn’t expect major changes to the project, which could take 20 years to complete at a cost of almost $3 billion.
MDOT’s public meetings will be held:
July 14 from 9 am until 11 am and from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at Cathedral Church of St. Paul, 4800 Woodward.
July 16 from 2 pm until 4 pm and from 6 pm to 8 pm at Wayne County Community College District’s Eastern Campus, 5901 Conner.
