Greenfield Village Remembers the American Civil War
This Memorial Day weekend, Civil War re-enacters take over the Henry Ford.
Greenfield Village is remembering the U.S. Civil War this Memorial Day weekend. The historical site will host nine-hundred re-enactors who will demonstrate how Union and Confederate soldiers lived during the nation’s deadliest war. Coordinator Jim Johnson says the event is equal parts celebration and commemoration.
“You’ll be able to talk to so many people about the time period and what life may have been like for soldiers and for civilians during the period of the Civil War in the 1860s. But it’s also a time to reflect on those that have given their lives for the country and those that are currently serving for us.”
Jim Johnson, Coordinator of the Civil War Remembrance
Johnson says this year is particularly significant. It marks the 150th anniversary of Robert E. Lee’s surrender and President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.
