Gas Prices Always Go Up Before a Holiday, Right? Wrong, Says

Memorial Day travelers will pay almost $1 less per gallon than they did a year ago.

AAA considers Thursday the start of the Memorial Day weekend. The auto club says drivers will pay fuel prices that are almost $1 a gallon cheaper than they were a year ago. But prices have been creeping up this week. The average price in Michigan is $2.74 a gallon, 13 cents higher than it was on May 14. Industry analyst Patrick DeHaan of tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller the price of oil started rising in March. He adds that while prices have risen this week, they don’t always go up before a major holiday.

AAA tracks fuel prices every day. Find the latest averages here.
