Making Laws Isn’t What It Used to Be
Former Michigan House Speaker Paul Hillegonds says term limits make legislating harder.
A former state lawmaker says he’s disappointed that the Michigan Legislature and Governor Rick Snyder haven’t been able to pass a bill to increase spending on roads. Republican Paul Hillegonds served in the State House for 18 years. He was elected Speaker in 1993. Two years later, he shared that post with Curtis Hertel, when Democrats and Republicans held an equal number of seats in the House. Hillegonds tells WDET’s Pat Batcheller why he thinks it’s harder for politicians in Lansing to get things done today than it was 20 years ago. Hillegonds is the chairman of the Regional Transit Authority of Southeast Michigan.
