The Detroit Public Library is making available hundreds of documents from Detroit’s first African-American mayor. The Coleman A. Young Mayoral Papers are now open for public viewing. Detroit Public Library’s coordinator of special collections Mark Bowden says researchers have much to gain from the letters and memos.

They’ll find important insights into Coleman Young as a seminal figure in urban-political history as well as racial, economic and political dynamics of Detroit during the second half of the 20th century.

Mark Bowden, Detroit Public Library’s Coordinator of Special Collections

Bowden says the library’s Burton Historical Collection received a special grant to process the letters. Mayor Coleman A. Young served four terms as Detroit’s mayor from 1974 to 1994.
