Council Approves Arena Rezoning
Olympia Development gets okay to start construction. Bill Shea of Crain’s breaks it down.
The Detroit City Council voted Tuesday to rezone property for a new hockey arena, giving Olympia Development what it needs to start building the rink. The Council appeared to get what it needed, in the form of assurances from Olympia that it will renovate one of two vacant historic hotels in the Cass Corridor. The council postponed the rezoning vote several times before approving it eight-to-nothing. WDET’s Pat Batcheller asked Bill Shea of Crain’s Detroit Business to explain the reason for the delay, and also how the arena will be financed.
