Wayne County Extends Foreclosure Deadline

Wayne County is extending a deadline for paying property taxes to May 12th to help owners keep their homes.

Wayne County officials are extending the deadline for homeowners to pay some or all of their property taxes and avoid foreclosure.

The county sent out 72,000 foreclosure notices – 62,000 of them in the city of Detroit.

Home owners had until the end of March to make payment arrangements.

But now the Wayne County Treasurer is extending the deadline to pay delinquent taxes to May 12th.

The Detroit City Council passed a resolution requesting a moratorium on foreclosures to give owners more time to take advantage of poverty exemptions and possibly have their property reassessed.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan says the city will waive interest and penalties on 2015 taxes so long as they are paid by 2016.
