Feds Return Control Of Housing Commission To Detroit

   The US Housing and Urban Development Department is preparing to return control of the Detroit Housing Commission to city officials.

   The federal agency took over the Housing Commission in 2005 after finding that it did not comply with various mandated regulations.

   That included problems with financial record-keeping and allowing housing units to deteriorate.

   In 2012 Housing and Urban Development officials withheld millions of dollars in Community Development Block Grants targeted for Detroit because federal officials feared that fiscal cutbacks left the city with too few personnel to properly oversee or manage grant funding.

   But now federal officials say the Housing Commission has shown consistent accountability and, for the first time in two decades, every public housing development in Detroit received a passing grade during inspections.
