Michigan Attractions Can Now be Virtually Visited via Google Maps

Pure Michigan partnered with Google to document about 40 different sites.

Interested tourists can now visit about 40 Michigan attractions from the comfort of their homes. Pure Michigan volunteers have captured 360 degree views of sites like Sleeping Bear Dunes, Pictured Rocks and the top of the Mackinac Bridge. Michigan Economic Development Corporation Vice President of Travel David West says volunteers walked, or paddled, around the landmarks with a special device designed by Google.

“It’s about 45 pounds. It’s on like a backpack, and it looks like a giant sphere that sits up about, you know, two feet above your head, and, what it does, is it’s 12, 65-megapixel cameras that constantly takes photographs.”

West says Michigan is the first state in the Midwest to use the Google Trekker. He says he expects to bring the device to more places around the state soon.
