In The Groove With Comedian Ilana Glazer
The New York City comic picks three formative songs from three formative years of her life ahead of Detroit tour stop
As the creator of Comedy Central’s “Broad City,” Ilana Glazer has arrived as a definitive voice in a new wave of comedians.
On Tuesday, Glazer will be joined by Phoebe Robinson of WYNC’s 2 Dope Queens fame for a night of stand-up at the Masonic Temple. Tickets are available here.
Ahead of the Detroit tour stop, Glazer talked to WDET’s CultureShift for our regular In The Groove series where a wide range of guests talk about three formative songs from three formative years of their life.
As a kid, Glazer was focused on music more than comedy and got really into Miles Davis’ album, Milestones, from 1958.
“I feel like this whole album, Milestones, has such peaks and valleys and it’s so robust ,” Glazer says. “‘Dr. Jackle’ speaks to that, sort of, unending, gnawing energy I had at that age.”
At 21-years-old, Glazer was finding confidence in herself and her comedy by she drawing inspiration from the bravado of hip hop artist Nicki Minaj.
“Nicki Minaj has been a big influence on me,” she says. “I really learned … bravado and how to even just feign confidence starting with this album.”
“I Get Crazy” by Lil Wayne featuring Nicki Minaj was the song that best represents that period in Glazer’s life.
Today, Glazer can’t stop listening to “Bodak Yellow” by Cardi B.
“Everyone is…rooting for Cardi B,” she says. “I love that she is this lightning rod for all these different cultures.”
