Detroit’s Own Cye Pie & Ya Homies Performs Live at WDET Studios
The local band talks the Detroit music scene and the feeling they’re trying to capture with their sound
Cye Pie & Ya Homies is one of the latest exports from Detroit with a sound that is equal parts R&B, funk and soul. During a recent stop at the WDET studios, the band gave an interview to CultureShift’s Ryan Patrick Hooper and performed their track “Same Thing.”
“Funk is more than a genre,” says Cye Pie, lead vocalist and synth player for her namesake group. “It’s a feeling. It’s a state of being.”
When asked where the group fits within the lexicon of Detroit’s local music scene today, saxophone player Kelly “Lady Sax-o-Soul” Holt says the group blends in while managing to do their own thing.
“We blend in,” says Holt. “You sit down and what feels good is what you play and what you sing.”
“At some point, you just have to do what you do and let it go where it wants to go,” says Cye Pie & Ya Homies bass player Randy Streicher.
Cye Pie & Ya Homies will be performing during this year’s Noel Night in Midtown scheduled for Saturday, December 2.
