Enhancing awareness of our communities and cultures through art.
The Artist Next Door illuminates and celebrates Detroit area artists from a variety of cultural backgrounds and disciplines to enhance awareness and understanding of our communities and cultures. The project highlights the work of six Detroit-area artists whose work gives us a greater understanding of their cultural heritage and brings us closer as a region of neighbors.
In 2021, WDET and a jury of artists selected six artist fellows to create an original piece of artwork. The artist’s process and work was photographed and the artists were profiled on WDET’s CultureShift. A digital story was created about each artist. The six fellows each received a $1,000 stipend. WDET hosted in-person artist events for interactive conversations, and art and cultural communities will be encouraged to highlight the work of the artists throughout the next year.
