This latest track from Protomartyr, a killer Detroit post-punk outfit and absolute Culture City favorite, sounds like a fist on a table; it’s all pent up and meaningful. But that clenched hand, well it’s not just any fist, it’s Jean Claude Van Damme’s, after he rolls it in glue and glass in Kickboxer. And that’s just the first half of the song. The hypnotic second movement is a battle unto itself.

Detroit’s 314th BDAY @ Roosevelt Park & Motor City Wine | Friday & Saturday
As Detroit begins its 314th revolution ‘round the sun, we celebrate in modern fashion with food, wine, and Motor City- made music. On Friday, Forward Arts convenes cultural programmers and lovers of the arts at Motor City Wine, with food from Esto’s Garage and music provided by Rocksteady Disco.
Also celebrating the 313’s 314th is the second annual Raise the Flag Festival, which began earlier this week and is programming music, yoga and a whole lot more all around town. Check out beats of many varieties at the Old Miami and lineup of righteous rock bands at Roosevelt Park.

Featuring John Doe and the original lineup, X swings thru Ferndale’s finest rock club to put down a bevy of timeless proto-alternative rock jams.
MO POP Festival @ West Riverfront Park | Saturday & Sunday from 12:30 PM – 11 PM
The biggest indie rock festival in Detroit ever. Flat out. Featuring Chromeo, Modest Mouse, Iron & Wine, Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas, Viet Cong, King Tuff, more than 20 food trucks, arts and crafts, as well as endless kegs of cold beer from Michigan and around the country.
BFF FEST @ MOCAD | Saturday @ 2 PM
The Seraphine Collective is a group of women, all Detroit-based artists, whose mission is to foster the scene and create opportunity for new artists on the scene. Saturday marks the second iteration of their BFF FEST, a throwdown of badass midwestern bands led by the raddest of ladies.
Nick Cave: Here Hear Dance Lab @ The Dequindre Cut | Sunday @ 4 PM
Working with the Cranbrook Art Museum, the phenomenal performance artist Nick Cave continues his Detroit takeover this Sunday at the Dequindre Cut. Cave has partnered with local dancers and musicians, and given each group a “box” of supplies they will use to create a live performance. All performances are FREE and open to the public.
The SECOND performance will be held at the Dequindre Cut (under the East Lafayette overpass) and will be choreographed by Biba Bell with music by Frank Pahl.
Michigan Glass Project’s Main Event @ 3 Detroit Locations | Friday thru Sunday
Join Michigan’s premier glassblowers for three days of live music, food, and demonstrations and collaborations on multiple artistic creations. The Main Event is going down at the Russell Industrial Center — with parties at the Whitney and The Zeniths. Some proceeds go to benefit Art Road Nonprofit, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that brings art classes to schools in Detroit.
