California Sets 2035 Deadline For Zero Emissions Mandate
General Motors, Ford Motor Co. and Fiat Chrysler will face a new push to rollout electric vehicles to stay competitive in one of the country’s largest new car markets.
California says it plans to phase out the sale gasoline powered cars entirely.
The decision comes from Gov. Gavin Newsom, who signed an executive order requiring car companies meet a zero-emission standard by the year 2035.
The move gives Detroit’s automakers 15 years to ramp up production of alternative energy vehicles. Failing to do so would mean Ford, General Motors and Fiat Chrysler could lag behind in the largest car market in the U.S. Annually more than 15% of all new vehicle purchases are made in California.
